STUDY BASICS

Are you fluent in English and in Spanish, French or German? Are you between 18-35 years of age? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to better understand how bilingual people process language. Participation involves 1 visit that lasts up to 2 hours. Compensation is provided.


STUDY PURPOSE
People who speak more than one language fluently are called bilingual. Researchers think that people who are bilingual may have different ways of processing language. The purpose of this study is to better understand how people who are bilingual in English and another language (either Spanish, French, or German) process language.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Ages 18-35
  • Fluent in English
  • Bilingual in Spanish, French (conversationally proficient) or German (native speakers only)

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
Participation involves one visit that lasts up to 2 hours. You will complete several tasks designed to assess your linguistic and cognitive processing. Tasks include picture identification, measures of memory and attention, and language tests.

Melinda Fricke

Melinda Fricke, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Fricke is a graduate of the University of California. Dr. Fricke’s research interests include the use of experimental and corpus linguistic methods to study psycholinguistic processes involved in speech production and speech perception.
