STUDY BASICS

Are you currently pregnant? Do you take medication such as methadone or buprenorphine for an opiate use disorder? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to help better understand beliefs and experiences about labor and delivery pain in women with opiate use disorder. Participation involves completing interviews and surveys. Compensation is provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

Pain management is an important part of the labor and delivery process. The purpose of this research study is to help better understand beliefs and experiences about pain and pain management during and after birth among pregnant women with opiate use disorder. Researchers hope their findings lead to better pain management approaches for women with opiate use disorders in the future.

  • Ages 18 and up
  • Currently pregnant
  • Take medication such as methadone or buprenorphine for opioid use disorder

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Participation takes place starting in your third trimester and ends 5 days after you give birth. You will meet with the study team once during your third trimester for an interview about beliefs and attitudes towards pain, and once when you are admitted to the hospital to give birth. You will also complete online surveys at the time of enrollment and once per day during the 5 days following your delivery.

Grace Lim

Grace Lim, MD, MS, is a physician scientist and board-certified obstetric anesthesiologist who has dedicated her clinical, educational, and research career to improving health and outcomes for mothers and babies. Dr. Lim’s research focuses on acute clinical care and interventions in periods of stress and trauma, such as childbirth or surgery, so that long-term recovery and maternal and neonatal health are optimized.
