STUDY BASICS

Are you age 60 or up, overweight or obese, and been told that you might have pre-diabetes? Do you want to lose weight and become more physically active? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to help find out how two long-term weight management programs may impact your type 2 diabetes risk and overall health. Study will last 18 months. Compensation provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

Older adults who are overweight or obese are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems. Healthy lifestyle programs that include diet and exercise interventions can help to lower the risk of developing health problems related to obesity and pre-diabetes, but older adults do not always have access to these types of programs.

The purpose of this study is to help researchers compare two healthy lifestyle programs (both use in-person group sessions followed by telephone-based lifestyle coaching) to find out how they can improve health, physical functioning, and well-being for older adults who are overweight or obese and already have pre-diabetes. Researchers hope their findings will lead to better ways to deliver healthy lifestyle programs to older adults at high risk of developing health problems.


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Age 60 or up
  • Overweight or obese (BMI 27 or greater). NIH BMI calculator: https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm
  • Not diagnosed with diabetes, but may have pre-diabetes
  • Have access to a telephone and a DVD player OR an Internet-connected device (computer, tablet, laptop)
  • Willing and able to travel to one of the following participating locations for in-person visits: 
    • Vintage Center for Active Adults - East Liberty
    • Bethel Park Community Center – Bethel Park
    • Hampton Fields Village - Allison Park
    • Jewish Community Center - South Hills
    • Penn Hills Senior Center – Penn Hills
    • Other sites to be named based on interest
 

 


WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Participation lasts for 18 months and involves in-person visits at the beginning of the study and every six months throughout the study.  Visits take about one hour and include height, weight and waist measurements, blood draws, blood pressure assessments, physical function tests, and surveys related to physical and mental health.

During the first five months, all participants will take part in 17 group session conference calls and will also be asked to watch videos about healthy diet, weight loss, and physical activity.

At month six, participants will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to take part in one of two groups for an 12 additional months. One group of participants will have 30-minute phone calls (about one per month) that include learning new weight and activity maintenance strategies and ongoing home assignments. In addition, participants will be offered extra assistance from a physical activity expert to help build an activity program. The other group of participants will have 15-minute group phone calls (about one per month) that include motivational messages and social support for lifestyle goals.

Elizabeth Venditti

Elizabeth M. Venditti, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Venditti’s research interests include diabetes and disease prevention, obesity intervention and lifestyle health behavior, aging epidemiology, and health-related quality of life for aging persons.
