STUDY BASICS

Are you a 21-28 year old male? Do you consider yourself a social drinker? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to help better understand how drinking alcohol affects social experiences. Eligible participants must have a male friend they drink with regularly who may also be willing to participate in the study. Compensation provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

Drinking alcohol affects different people in different ways. The purpose of this study is to help researchers learn more about how social drinking alcohol affects a person’s social experiences.


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Males aged 21-28
  • Social drinker (drink at least one day per week)
  • Have a male friend you drink with regularly, who may also be willing to participate in the study (participant and friend may not be in a romantic relationship)
  • Do not weigh more than 200 pounds
  • Not diagnosed with diabetes, bipolar disorder, alcohol use disorder, or substance use disorder
  • Never received treatment for an alcohol or substance use disorder

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Participation involves two visits during which you and a friend will be asked to complete questionnaires and consume either an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage together before completing computer-based tasks. One session will last about three hours and the other session will last about five hours. Participants must arrange transportation to and from the sessions, and will not be permitted to drive any vehicle, car, or bike.

MEET THE RESEARCHER


Michael Sayette

Michael Sayette, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Sayette received his bachelor’s degree at Dartmouth College and his PhD at Rutgers University. He specializes in researching and teaching about alcohol use, alcoholism, cigarette craving, and the psychology of addiction. At his Alcohol and Smoking Research Lab, Dr. Sayette conducts research studies that look to better understand alcohol and tobacco use. A Fellow of the Association of Psychological Science and the American Psychological Association, Dr. Sayette has been a professor at the University of Pittsburgh since 1991.
