STUDY BASICS
Are you between the ages of 55-80 and experiencing symptoms of depression? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to help understand why some people become depressed and have thoughts of hurting themselves, while others do not. Compensation provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), older age is associated with an increased risk of suicide. The purpose of this research study is to help researchers understand why some people with depression want to end their lives, and others do not. Additionally, researchers are interested in understanding how long-term and short-term changes in emotions affect decision-making.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?

- Experiencing depression
- No history of stroke

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
This study involves 2-3 interview sessions that will take place at Bellefield Towers in Oakland, or in your home. Each session will last approximately 2-3 hours. These sessions can take place on different days. As part of the study, you will be asked to provide an extensive psychiatric history, answer questions about your mood, and play games to examine your problem-solving and decision-making style. Researchers will interview you again 3 months later, and then once annually for up to 4 years over the phone or in-person. This is not a treatment study, and the study does not provide medication or therapy. This study will perform memory testing at no cost.
