STUDY BASICS

Are you between 28-40+ weeks pregnant and planning to breastfeed? Was your pre-pregnancy weight considered overweight or obese? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to help learn more about the impact of weight stigma on breastfeeding outcomes. Compensation provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

Breastfeeding has many benefits for both mother and baby, but research has shown that pregnant women who are overweight or obese are less likely to breastfeed compared to women without pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity. The purpose of this study is to find out if experiencing weight stigma, such as negative stereotypes, discrimination, and prejudice, has an effect on breastfeeding outcomes in women who are overweight or obese. Researchers hope their findings will lead to a better understanding of the challenges that women face when breastfeeding and improve patient-healthcare provider communication in the future.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Women ages 18 and up
  • 28-40+ weeks pregnant
  • Planning to breastfeed

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

This study will involve completing a weight stigma questionnaire during the third trimester of pregnancy and again at 3 months after delivery. The questionnaires will be administered in person, online, or via telephone. Some individuals will be invited to complete a 30-45 minute interview on your experience communicating with your healthcare provider. The interview may be completed in person or via telephone.
