STUDY BASICS

Are you pregnant and planning to have a cesarean delivery (C-section) at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to help find out if a non-invasive, battery-operated device can decrease pain and improve recovery after delivery. Participation takes place in the hospital and up to 5 days after delivery. Compensation is provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

Many women take opioid pain medications after a cesarean delivery (C-section), but these medications can have unwanted side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and breathing problems. In some cases, taking opioid medications can also lead to substance use disorders.

The purpose of this research study is to find out if a non-drug, non-invasive device called the NSS-2 BRIDGE can decrease pain and improve recovery after cesarean delivery. The NSS-2 BRIDGE, which is a battery-operated device that attaches to the ear with electrodes, works by directly blocking nerves in the brain that are responsible for the sensation of pain. Researchers hope their findings lead to better ways to manage post-surgical pain and  reduce the need for opioids in the future.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Pregnant females aged 18 and up
  • In the third trimester of your pregnancy
  • Planning to have a cesarean delivery (C-section) at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Eligible participants will complete surveys and will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to one of three groups after delivery. Participants will either receive the device that is being tested, an inactive device, or no device at all. The study team will follow-up with you daily in the hospital and/or when discharged home for up to 5 days post-cesarean. During this time, you will complete online surveys and may be phoned by the study team.
