STUDY BASICS
Do you want to reduce the time you spend on 2 or more smartphone apps? Do you use an Android phone (version 7.0 or newer) that is not a OnePlus? You may be eligible to participate in a research study to help find out if personalized interventions can help people reduce their smartphone use. Involves 1 in-person visit, 3.5-4 weeks of data collection, and 2 online surveys. Compensation provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
Some smartphone users would like to reduce the amount of time they spend on their device, but currently available interventions do not work for everyone. The purpose of this study is help researchers find out if personalized interventions can help people reduce their smartphone use. Researchers hope their findings will lead to better ways to reduce smartphone usage.COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- Age 18 and up
- Own an Android phone OS 7.0 or newer that is NOT a OnePlus device
- Want to reduce your use of 2 or more smartphone apps
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
Participation involves one in-person visit to Carnegie Mellon University campus where you will have an application installed on your smartphone that will collect data about your device usage, and data from sensors embedded in your smartphone. The visit should take about 20 minutes to complete. Participants will keep the app installed on your phone for 3.5-4 weeks and fill out 2 online surveys (about 20 minutes each) related to your phone usage and mental health.IRB: STUDY2019_00000018

Dr. Goel’s research focuses on designing, implementing, and testing new sensing systems for immediate, high-impact problems in various domains, including health sensing, technologies for developing world, activity recognition, and novel interactions.
