STUDY BASICS

Are you the parent of an adolescent girl aged 13-17? If so, your daughter may be eligible to participate in a research study about social media use and body image. The study involves 1 visit lasting about 60-90 minutes, during which your daughter will complete a computer task and surveys. Compensation provided.

STUDY PURPOSE
Many factors can affect a teen’s body image. The purpose of this research study is to better understand the associations between adolescent girls’ social media use and body dissatisfaction. Researchers hope their findings will lead to better mental health for adolescents in the future.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?
  • Ages 13-17
  • Identify as female
  • Have normal eyesight or eyesight that has been corrected with regular contact lenses or glasses
  • Must not have an eye disorder or visual deficiency that cannot be corrected with regular contact lenses or regular glasses

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
Participation involves one in-person visit that will last about 60 to 90 minutes. At this appointment, your daughter will view a series of images on a computer while a small bar on the computer tracks her eye movements. These images are designed to look like social media pages. This task is non-invasive and the equipment will not touch your child physically. Following these computer tasks, your daughter will be asked to complete confidential surveys about her thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
