STUDY BASICS

Will you receive treatment for a medical condition that may result in your infertility, and want to preserve your ovarian tissue to possibly allow you to have your own children in the future? You may be able to take part in a research study to develop techniques for long-term preservation of ovarian function through freezing of ovarian tissues.

STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to develop techniques for long-term preservation of ovarian function through cryopreservation (freezing) of ovarian tissue before undergoing therapies that are likely to cause infertility (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation, etc.). Researchers will store participants’ ovarian tissue to use as a possible resource to allow medical procedures to try to restore fertility in the future using experimental techniques currently under development. This study will also provide a portion of your tissue for research to advance the understanding of 1) the best techniques for freezing ovarian tissue, and 2) methods of developing mature eggs from frozen ovarian tissues.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Ages 18-40
  • Will be having treatment for a medical condition which may result in infertility (inability to become pregnant).

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
This study involves a surgical procedure to remove your ovarian tissue. After the surgical procedure, there will be one post-operative checkup to make sure you are healing as expected. You will be contacted every year by phone or mail to follow your status over time and to answer questions about any future use of your frozen tissue and the possible outcomes of your fertility preservation treatment.

MEET THE RESEARCHER

Kyle Orwig

Kyle E. Orwig, PhD, is professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Orwig is also the director of the Fertility Preservation Program of UPMC. Dr. Orwig is an experienced and respected researcher at the Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI), where he oversees his own lab. His lab focuses on studying the studies normal development of fertility at a molecular level, to better understand conditions that lead to infertility and develop treatments for them. Dr. Orwig is also the director of the Fertility Preservation Program.
