STUDY BASICS
Are you currently breastfeeding your child? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to learn more about stem cells in human breastmilk. Participation involves one visit to Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC to express a sample of breastmilk and complete a questionnaire. Compensation and parking provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The presence of stem cells in human breastmilk is a very new discovery. Stem cells are cells that have the potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth (such as muscle, blood, and bone); they also serve as an internal repair system for adults. Because of the way stem cells enable growth and repair, they may offer the potential to treat certain diseases and conditions. The purpose of this study is to help researchers better identify the stem cells in breastmilk and understand their potential.COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- Ages 18-49
- Currently breastfeeding your child
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
This study involves one visit where you will complete a survey and undergo a brief review of your medical records. In a private room, you will be asked to supply a breastmilk sample using an electronic breast pump. Researchers will collect up to 2 ounces and all extra breastmilk will be given back to you to take home for your baby.IRB: STUDY19020253
