STUDY BASICS

Scheduled for total knee replacement surgery? If you are African American or Caucasian; non-Hispanic, you may be able to be in a research study comparing physical therapy and post-op function. Participants complete simple questionnaires via phone or U.S. Mail before and after surgery. Optional focus group. Compensation provided.


STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to help researchers compare physical therapy utilization and post-operative function in people undergoing total knee replacement surgery.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • African American or Caucasian; non-Hispanic
  • 18 and older
  • Scheduled for total knee replacement surgery (1 knee)

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
A simple questionnaire done via telephone or U.S. Mail before and after surgery. After your post-op physical therapy, you may be invited to a one-time only focus group (optional) to talk about your experience with physical therapy. Focus group sessions will be in Oakland and will take approximately 60-90 minutes. You can still participate in the questionnaire portion of the study without participating in the discussion group.

MEET THE RESEARCHER


Allyn Bove

Ally Bove, PT, DPT, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. She completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Columbia University and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research interests include health disparities and cost-effectiveness research related to lower extremity arthritic disorders.
