STUDY BASICS

Have you been diagnosed with breast cancer, or are you at high risk for developing breast cancer? Are you interested in helping researchers find better ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat breast cancer? If you are having surgery at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC to remove a breast mass, you may be able to provide tissue from that procedure for storage and use in future research studies.

STUDY PURPOSE

The Breast Disease Research Repository (BDRR) is a place where breast tissue and other biological specimens such as blood, urine, and other fluids or tissues are stored and used for research studies. Researchers hope their findings will lead to better ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat breast cancer in the future.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Men and women ages 18 and up
  • Diagnosed with breast cancer, or are at high-risk for developing breast cancer
  • Planning to have surgery at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC to remove a breast mass

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Participants agree to allow their biological specimens to be deposited into the Breast Disease Research Repository (BDRR). The collection of the breast tissue samples for the research study will be done when other routine care is being performed; there are no extra visits and no additional tissue is removed or collected. Participants may be asked for small additional blood samples and/or for additional samples of urine or other fluids. If possible, those would be obtained at a time when you are having specimens collected as part of your clinical care. Participants also agree to allow Breast Disease Research Repository (BDRR) staff to review and collect past, current, and future medical record information.
