STUDY BASICS

Have you had COVID during a pregnancy? You and your baby may be able to participate in a research study to understand the lasting effects of the COVID infection on pregnant people and their babies.

STUDY PURPOSE

Researchers at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and across the country are working to learn how COVID affects the body, and why some people who got COVID are sick many months later. Feeling sick for a long time after a COVID infection is called “Long COVID”. We are also interested in how COVID affects the babies born to mothers who had COVID when they were pregnant.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?

You may be eligible to participate if:

  • You had COVID during a pregnancy.
  • At least 18 years old
  • Willing to attend study visits at Magee-Womens Hospital and other nearby locations at least 4 times in the first year, then once each year for up to 4 years.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Both mothers and their children can be in the research study. You will NOT be given treatment for COVID as part of the study.

Researchers may ask mothers to:

  • Do surveys (answer questions) about their health every 3 months by phone, email, or video chat
  • Have simple health exams about 2 times a year
  • Give very small amounts of pee (urine), spit (saliva), blood, stool (poop) - collected by you at home, or fluid from your nose about 1 to 2 times a year
  • Do surveys about your child’s health and development every 6 to 12 months
  • Bring your child to get simple health exams about once a year
  • Have your child undergo 1 optional blood test

Based on your answers to survey questions and results of your tests, you and your child may qualify for additional research study procedures that you can choose to complete.

You will be paid for your time to do surveys and tests as part of the study. You and your child may be part of the study for up to 4 years, depending on when you join.
