Novel IV/PIC Water-Guard Effectiveness

STUDY BASICS

Are you 18 years of age or older? You may be eligible to participate in research study to evaluate a prototype to protect IV patients while they are in the shower. Compensation provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

This study is being conducted to evaluate the use and success of a novel design(s) for a waterproof IV covering (shower guard). The novel design(s) will be compared to existing solutions already on the market, which are currently used in hospitals.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

• Have one (1) visit with our testing team. During this visit you will be asked to put on the IV Shower Guard and perform a series of tasks. Prior to testing, we will tape an IV catheter and extension tubing onto your arm to simulate conditions under which a long-term care patient would be showering in. No IV will be inserted. Then the shower guard will be placed on your arm to begin testing.
• Be asked to perform a range of motion test consisting of a series of different arm movements that could be used while showering in order to assess the ability of the shower guard to move with a patient. The result of this test will be compared to a baseline, the shower guard used at UPMC hospitals (AnchorDry).
• Perform a series of tests underneath a stream of water to test the ability of the shower guard design to effectively mitigate water intrusion.
• Fill out small questionnaires regarding comfort of shower guard.
