STUDY BASICS

Are you 18-60 years old and have a history of middle ear problems, such as recurrent ear infections or ear pressure? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a 1–visit research study to compare two methods for testing ear tube function. Compensation provided.

STUDY PURPOSE
The Eustachian tubes connect the middle ears to the back of the throat. Poorly functioning Eustachian tubes can lead to recurrent middle ear infections and fluid in the ears. Unfortunately, currently available methods for testing Eustachian tube function are costly, difficult to perform, and may not work well for some people. The purpose of this study is to help researchers compare two methods—tympanometer plus a device called the EarPopper® vs. tubomanometer—for testing Eustachian tube function. Researchers hope their findings will lead to the development of a simple, easy-to-use test for Eustachian tube function.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Ages 18-60
  • In general good health, but have a history of ear infections of the middle ear or other middle ear problems
  • No current holes or tubes in either eardrum
  • Have not had a hole or tear in eardrum patched or closed
  • Have not had surgery done on the bones of the ear

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
Following an initial phone call to be sure you are eligible for this study, participation involves one 3-4 hour visit. During the visit, the study team will examine your ears, nose, and throat and perform Eustachian tube function tests. This study does not include any medications, needles, or blood draws.
