STUDY BASICS

Are you the parent of a 3-5 year old child with behavior and sleep difficulties? You and your child may be eligible for a research study to examine the effectiveness of parent behavioral interventions for preschool aged children. Compensation is provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of this research study is to examine the effectiveness of treatments for preschool aged children with behavioral and sleep difficulties. All participating families will receive a parent behavioral intervention, with evidence based strategies for improving disruptive behavior, from a licensed behavioral health clinician. Your child will also continue to receive routine care provided by your pediatrician while you are participating in the study. You can continue to receive additional treatments that may be advantageous to you and/or your child while in this study including medication management as deemed appropriate by your health care provider.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?

Eligible participants are:

  • Legal guardians at least 18 years old
  • Children between 3-5 years old with behavioral and sleep difficulties
  • Children receiving care at one of the following CCP practices: Bass Wolfson Squirrel Hill, GIL East Liberty, GIL Murrysville, CCP Shenango, or CCP ABC Pediatrics
  • Children that have not had delays in their milestones or been diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder (e.g., Autism, Down's Syndrome)

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

After enrolling in the study, your family will be assigned at random (like flipping a coin) to receive one of two behavioral treatments. Both treatments involve participating in 4 to 6 sessions with a behavioral health therapist who works with your child's pediatrician. These sessions will occur virtually or in your pediatrician's office and will last approximately 1 hour. The behavioral health therapist will work with you to identify areas of concern you have regarding your child's behavior and teach you strategies/skills to address these behaviors. You will be asked to complete "homework" assignments between sessions to practice these skills.

We will also ask that you complete questionnaires on three occasions (before treatment, after treatment, and 4 months later) regarding your family demographics, your own psychological factors such as depression, anxiety, stress ADHD symptoms, and sleep, as well as your child's behavior and sleep. At each of those timepoints, your child will be asked to wear an actigraphy watch to monitor their sleep and you will receive texts twice daily that ask about your child's behavior and sleep over a 2-week period.

Heather Joseph

Heather Joseph, DO, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh where she completed her general psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship. Her research interest is in the identification of early signals of risk for developing neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Her long-term goal is to aid in the development of early interventions to prevent familial transmission of ADHD.
