STUDY PURPOSE
This study is being conducted to learn if a peer support mentor can help to improve CPAP adherence in women during their first 90-days of treatment
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- You are older than 18 years old and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea
- You have not yet started the CPAP, but are planning to start in the next 3 months
- You are willing to be randomized into 1 of 2 groups:
- Group 1: Will be matched with a peer mentor, another woman, who is passionate about their CPAP and will provide encouragement & support for the 1st 90-days of treatment
- Group 2: Will receive education on sleep
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
We will ask you to complete 8 online questionnaires about your sleep and daytime symptoms. This interventional study will have two arms. In one arm, we will train and partner peer mentors with women beginning or restarting CPAP treatment. The peer mentor will meet with her mentee 8 times, the first time in person one-two weeks before treatment initiation and then via telephone for the next 7 calls over a 90-day or three-month period. The calls will occur on an agreed upon time and day between the mentor and mentee. The peer mentor will provide 1:1 educational, emotional, and instrumental support to her mentee during the visits. In the other arm, women beginning or restarting CPAP treatment will be provided educational materials but will not be given any emotional or instrumental support. We will compare both arms to see if the peer support arm was more effective at promoting CPAP adherence in women. We will conduct interviews with you and with your mentors to determine satisfaction with the study, the peer mentoring process, and determine in what ways peer support was helpful or not helpful to you. We will pay for your parking or bus pass to come for your initial in person visit with your mentor. Once the study is over, we will call you to learn what are your experiences and thoughts were about wearing the sleep device.
