STUDY BASICS

Are you the parent of an adolescent that is currently involved in the juvenile justice system? Your child may be eligible to participate is a research study to learn about the sleep of adolescents involved in the juvenile justice system, and to understand how we can implement strategies for improving sleep in various system settings. Compensation is provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of the study is to learn about the sleep of adolescents involved in the juvenile justice system. We also want to learn about their experiences with sleep treatment while in the system and how we could deliver a sleep program in various juvenile justice system settings.


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?
  • Age 13-17
  • Currently involved in the juvenile justice system

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
  • Consent - about 15 minutes - A brief discussion with a study staff member to review the details of the study and formally agree to participate.
  • Survey - about 30-60 minutes - Participants will complete a survey by reporting on various aspects of their sleep, health, and functioning.
  • Sleep Tracking - 10 days - Participants will complete a daily sleep diary online. Some participants will be asked to wear an activity monitor called an Actiwatch.
  • Interview - about 45 minutes - You may be asked to complete a short interview with study staff about sleep and mental health.

MEET THE RESEARCHER


Jessica Levenson

Jessica C. Levenson, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Levenson's research interests focus on designing and evaluating interventions for adolescents that enhance sleep health specifically to promote mental and physical health broadly. She uses qualitative and quantitative approaches to develop stakeholder-informed interventions that are likely to be effective, adopted, and implemented. Dr. Levenson's work also explores the role of disturbed sleep in the onset and course of depression and bipolar disorder. Dr. Levenson is a licensed clinical psychologist who works with adolescents and adults. Her clinical interests focus primarily on the treatment of mood disorders and sleep disorders.
