Monitoring Patients with Repetitive Head Impact with Gamma-glutamylcysteine Supplementation
STUDY BASICS
Have you experienced repetitive head impacts from contact sports or military service? You may be eligible for a research study investigating how GammaGlutamylcysteine (GGC) supplementation affects brain health, oxidative stress, and cognitive function. Participation includes MRI scans, cognitive testing, and blood analysis to assess brain changes over time. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
This research study will investigate glutathione level among individuals with exposure to repetitive head injury (RHI) and evaluate whether therapeutic oral supplementation with a compound known as gamma-glutamyl cysteine (GGC; commercially available as Continual-G) changes the level of glutathione (GSH). Glutathione is an antioxidant produced by the body through a natural process and helps to repair cells and reduce inflammation.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- History of repeated head impacts (such as retired NFL player, retired Navy SEAL/ army personnel with combat experience exposed to repetitive head impact)
- Age 30 - 70 years old
- Ability to read, speak English and give consent for participation
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
- 12 month commitment of GGC 2 times/day
- Two in-person visits to UPMC Presbyterian
- Provide blood and stool samples at each visit
- Complete neuropsychological tests at baseline and the 12 month follow-up
