STUDY BASICS

Are you prescribed tirzepatide for weight loss and willing to delay the start of it for 1-2 weeks? You may be eligible for a research study to examine the effects of resistance exercise, such as weightlifting, on retention of muscle mass and mental health in individuals taking tirzepatide (an obesity medication). Participation involves supervised, personal strength training sessions.

STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of resistance exercise, such as weightlifting, on retention of muscle mass and mental health in individuals taking tirzepatide (an obesity medication). Resistance exercise is focused on increasing the strength of your muscles, such as how much you can lift.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Men and women, ≥50 years old
  • Non-smoker
  • Obese (body mass index 30-45 kg/m2)
  • Inactive (less than 2 days/week of resistance training and less than 150 minutes/week of aerobic activity)
  • Prescribed tirzepatide for weight loss and willing to delay the start of it for 1-2 weeks

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

12-week Randomized Controlled Trial. You will be randomly assigned to one of two groups:

  • Group 1: Resistance Exercise Group

Supervised, personal strength training sessions twice a week for 60 minutes each during the first three months.

  • Group 2: Control Group

Optional:  After the 3-month period, you may choose to participate in the optional exercise program, which includes 60 minutes per session, 2 sessions per week for 3 months. You may follow your provider’s guidance for exercise, except for strength or resistance training.
