STUDY BASICS

Are you between the ages of 18-25? Do you consider yourself a night owl? Do you feel down or depressed? You may be able to participate in a research study to learn about how light affects mood. Compensation provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of this research study is to learn more about how light affects mood, sleep, and circadian rhythms (the timing of our body’s internal clock).
 


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • 18-25 years
  • feeling down or depressed
  • consider yourself a night owl (bedtime >1AM)
  • willing to abstain from nicotine and caffeine during the evening study visits

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
  • The research study involves up to 4 lab visits. The first visit (lasting about 2-3 hours) includes two interviews, assessments of eye response to light, and multiple questionnaires. 
  • Additional study visits and activities may include:
    • wearing a wristwatch-like activity monitor 
    • completing sleep diaries 
    • collecting saliva samples over 6-7 hours during an evening visit to measure hormone levels
    • completing a two-week light intervention study to increase morning light and decrease evening light.
