STUDY BASICS

Are you a healthy adult between 18 and 40 years old? You may be eligible for a research study of brain activity during sleep. The purpose of this research is to identify differences in brain activity during sleep between health individuals and individuals with schizophrenia, schizophreniform, or schizoaffective disorder. Compensation is provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of this research is to identify differences in brain activity during sleep between health individuals and individuals with schizophrenia, schizophreniform, or schizoaffective disorder. We will also investigate whether tones played during deep sleep can enhance specific features of sleep.


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Are between 18 and 40 years old
  • Have not been diagnosed with a mental illness in your lifetime

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
  • Clinical interviews 
  • Cognitive testing
  • 4 overnight sleep studies at the sleep clinic of Western Psychiatric hospital with wearable technology to monitor sleep

Fabio Ferrarelli

Fabio Ferrarelli, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. A graduate of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, Dr. Ferrarelli’s research interests include neuronal circuits contributing to altered sleep architecture in schizophrenia. He is now extending those lines of research to high risk children and adults.
