STUDY BASICS

Are you 18 to 65? Have you had a recent orthopedic injury? You may be eligible for a research study to understand why some people experience many serious symptoms following a mild traumatic brain injury, while others have very few of these symptoms. Compensation is provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to better understand how the brain changes and recovers after a mild traumatic brain injury (also called a concussion). You are being asked to participate because you have an orthopedic injury and no mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), or concussion.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • 18 to 65 years of age
  • had an orthopedic injury in the last 72 hours/3 days

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

If you decide to participate in this study, we will ask you to complete 4 visits:  An initial visit (baseline) and a follow-up assessment at 10 days (+/-3days), 30 days (+/-5days), and 90 days (+/- 7days). These visits will take between 30-60 minutes to complete.

At these visits we will do the following:

  1. Ask you to provide us with demographic and recent health history. We would like to have access to your past, current, and future medical records.
  2. Ask you questions that will help us assess the physical, social, and psychological impact your TBI has had on your life and the lives of your loved ones.
  3. Ask you to provide us with a blood, and/or saliva sample at each visit to perform our analyses. We will ask you to provide fingernail samples at 2 study visits.
