STUDY BASICS
Do you have an autism diagnosis? You may be eligible for a research study focused on suicide and mental health in autistic and non-autistic adults. Participants will answer questions about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences as well as use different kinds of technology (physiological sensors, fMRI) to learn how the body and brain react in different situations. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The goal of the University of Pittsburgh Autism Center for Excellence is to learn information that can be used to develop new ways to reduce suicide risk and support mental health.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- Age 18 to 65 years old
- Autistic or clinically diagnosed with autism by a professional
- Able and willing to wear chest and ankle sensors, and complete daily phone surveys over a 2-week period
- Able and willing to undergo fMRI scanning.
- Able to visit University of Pittsburgh or UPMC facilities at least two times. Most participants will come in three times.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
- In-person interviews and surveys
- 2-week period of wearing sensors and completing up to 8 daily surveys per day
- Online surveys
- fMRI brain scan
- Follow up interview and surveys at 6 and 12 months

Carla Mazefsky
Carla A. Mazefsky, PhD, is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Mazefsky is a graduate of the Virginia Commonwealth University where she received her PhD in Clinical Psychology. She received her postdoctoral training at the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics. Dr. Mazefsky’s research interests include emotion regulation as a critical mechanism in autism spectrum disorders.
