STUDY BASICS

Are you an adult that use a power wheelchair as your primary means of mobility? You may be eligible for a research study to evaluate a new control method for a wheelchair-mounted robotic arm among powered wheelchair users. Compensation provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of this is a research study to evaluate a new control method for a wheelchair-mounted robotic arm among powered wheelchair users.  This study will test a vision-guided, shared-control system for a robotic arm used to complete everyday tasks.


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Use a power wheelchair as your primary means of mobility.
  • Have difficulties performing everyday manipulation tasks such as reaching for a glass of water, opening a refrigerator, or picking up a toothbrush. 
  • Do NOT have impaired vision.
  • Do NOT have pressure ulcers that prevent you from sitting continuously for a long period of time.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

This study will be completed in six hours – either in one session or multiple sessions.

MEET THE RESEARCHER


Dan Ding

Dan Ding, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Sciences and Technology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Ding received her PhD from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in mechanical and automation engineering. She is an expert in developing and evaluating technology to help people with disabilities maintain or improve their functioning. Dr. Ding is also a research scientist at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL) at the Pittsburgh VA.
