STUDY BASICS

Researchers in the Department of Emergency Medicine are recruiting volunteers to act as patients in a research study where EMS professionals will apply investigative head and neck immobilization equipment during simulated emergency care. Study participants will take part in a 2-hour simulation as a patient. Compensation is provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

Head and neck movement during transport can increase the risk of further injury. An investigative device called EVAC-1 has been developed to improve stabilization during emergency care and includes small sensors that can track how much the head moves. This research is being done to test how well the EVAC-1 device works compared to the standard equipment, how comfortable it feels to patients, and how easy it is for EMS providers to use. The goal is to improve safety and outcomes for patients during emergency transport.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Adults age 18 and older, with preference given to volunteers 65+
  • Have a BMI less than 30
  • Able to lie on a backboard and stretcher and be safely moved
  • No acute or chronic spinal or musculoskeletal conditions
  • Does not use any spinal orthotics
  • Not pregnant or recovering from recent surgery
  • Persons may not have any condition that would preclude the subject from comfortably sitting or lying down.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
  • You will take part in a 2-hour simulation as a patient. During the session, a head and neck immobilization device will be applied, and you will be moved into different positions to simulate how patients are stabilized and transported in an emergency setting.
  • You will respond to survey questions about the comfort and effectiveness of the splint.
  • You will be compensated with a $50 debit gift card for participation.
  • Expect to wear comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes.
  • Study activities will be conducted in university laboratory settings and EMS training centers.
