STUDY BASICS

Do you drink alcohol often? Are you a man who is 21-29 years old? If so, you may be able to participate in a research study to learn more about the effects of alcohol on adult drinkers. Eligible participants own a smartphone, are able to show valid photo ID, and are willing to drink alcohol for the study. Compensation provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

Different people react in different ways when they drink alcohol. The purpose of this study is to learn how factors like gender, personality, genetics, and age are related to certain aspects of drinking. Researchers hope their findings will lead to a better understanding of addiction and treatment.

  • Men ages 21-29
  • Own a smartphone
  • Drink alcohol often
  • Able to show valid photo ID
  • Able to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination
  • Willing to consume alcohol as part of the study

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Participation involves attending 2 sessions at the Behavioral Research Lab on CMU’s campus and completing 2 sessions remotely over the phone and online. The first session takes about 2-2½ hours, and includes an interview and questionnaires. During the second session, participants may be asked to drink an alcoholic beverage in the lab so that the study team can examine the effects of alcohol on your thoughts, mood, memory, and performance on computer tasks. Participants will also answer questions on a smartphone at various times and complete follow-up interviews online and over the phone at 6 and 12 months after the last visit.
