STUDY BASICS

Are you pregnant and thinking about having a tubal sterilization (“getting your tubes tied”) after delivering your baby? Are you eligible for or enrolled in Medicaid? You may be interested in a research study to test a new interactive tool designed to help women make decisions about tubal sterilization. Participation may take place by phone/videoconference or in-person. Compensation provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

A tubal sterilization, also known as "getting your tubes tied" or tubal ligation, is a type of surgery that is done to permanently prevent pregnancy. The purpose of this study is to test a new interactive tool called “My Decision” that is designed to help women make decisions about tubal sterilizations. Researchers hope their findings will help women make informed decisions about family planning in the future.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Ages 21-45
  • Pregnant women less than 24 weeks gestation
  • Considering having a tubal sterilization (“getting your tubes tied”) after the delivery of your baby
  • Eligible for or enrolled in Medicaid

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Participants will be asked to complete three confidential interviews (one baseline interview conducted in-person or by phone/videoconference and two follow-ups conducted by phone) about tubal sterilization. Participants will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to complete the “My Decision” web-based decision aid or not during the first interview. This research study does not involve any treatments or medications.
