STUDY BASICS

Have you been diagnosed with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) or Runner’s Knee? You may be eligible for a research study to look at the relationship between findings on an ultrasound examination with features of patellofemoral pain syndrome. Participation involves questionnaires, simple exercises to gauge symptoms, and an ultrasound of both knees. Compensation is provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a common cause of knee pain for many people. In some cases, the pain can last long periods of time. Physical therapy is the main treatment for patellofemoral pain syndrome. We would like to evaluate if there are specific parts of the knee that may be targeted with therapies to relieve the symptoms of the condition sooner.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Are you age 18 - 40 years old?
  • Are you having pain in the front part of your knee?
  • Do you have pain with stairs, squatting, running, or jumping?
  • Have you been diagnosed with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS)?
  • Have you NOT had an injection to the knee in the past 3 months?
  • Do you NOT have any other damage or injuries to your knee?

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

A single visit and will take approximately 45 minutes:

  • Participants will be asked to complete a questionnaire about their symptoms.
  • Participants will be asked to complete a simple exercise to gauge the symptoms they are having with their knee pain.
  • An ultrasound examination of both knees will then be performed.
