Hear-a-thon Listening Relay
STUDY BASICS
Are you a healthy adult age 40 or older? You may be eligible for a research study to study audiovisual perception in human adults with the use of electroencephalography, also known as EEG. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of the study is to investigate audiovisual perception in human adults. Your participation may benefit others by developing an understanding of perceptual systems in the brain that may inform future medical treatments.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
Eligibile participants are:
• Age 40 and older
• Have normal hearing
• Have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (wear glasses or contact lenses)
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
If, after the screening, you qualify for the study, you will be asked to complete some auditory or visual tasks while in a sound booth. This may include identifying objects, listening to features of sound, or pressing a button after a change in the sound. This part of the study takes approximately 3 hours.
If after the first part of the study you are selected to be invited back to the second part of the study AND you agree to continue, you will be asked to complete some auditory or visual tasks while in a sound booth and you may be asked to sit still while wearing an EEG (electroencephalogram) cap on your head that contains electrodes and gel, meant to record electrical information at your scalp that corresponds to brain activity. The setup for EEG may take up to 30 minutes. You may perform up to 2 hours of tasks while wearing the EEG, followed by the opportunity to clean your head and debrief.
If you are selected, you will also be asked to fill in a questionnaire at home on your computer.
At most, the study will take 6 hours altogether, divided into two sessions, but often takes less time. You will be compensated for the time you are spending doing the study.
