How do we process subject pronouns in a second language?
STUDY BASICS
Are you interested in participating in a research study? You may be eligible for a research study to learn more about the way people learn and process new languages. This study will record your brain activity painlessly from the surface of your scalp. The experiment takes about 5 total hours. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to enable us to learn more about the way people learn and processes new languages. Language processes (including speaking, reading, writing, and listening) are extremely complex and the details of how these processes are carried out are still not well understood. The focus of this research is on the way that the brain carries out all of the details of these operations to allow people to use language successfully.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- have normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing
- be right-handed
- be at least age 18
- be a native speaker of American English with no prior exposure to French
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
This study will teach you a small set of French grammar and vocabulary. You will then engage in an activity where you rate the acceptability of sentences in both French and English while we record your brain activity using EEG (small electrode sensors will be placed on your scalp). You will also complete a few other cognitive tasks on the computer.
This is a three-part study – please only sign up if you can commit to all three sessions. Note that the experiment is expected to take 5 total hours.
