A Ketogenic Diet Research Study
STUDY BASICS
Do you have symptoms of bipolar disorder? You may be eligible for a research study testing a 16-week ketogenic trial (low carbohydrate, moderate protein, high fat) for young people. The study duration is 4-5 months. Participants receive a full diagnostic evaluation and a health eligibility assessment from the study team. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this research study is to examine the feasibility, tolerability, and potential effects of combining a ketogenic diet with standard psychiatric treatment on various outcomes, including depression, executive function, metabolic health, and inflammation in teens and young adults with bipolar spectrum disorders.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- Ages 18-21 years old
- Have symptoms of bipolar disorder (moods that alternate between depression and periods of excessive energy and activity)
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
- Diagnostic evaluation from a psychiatrist and clinical team, including guidance on bipolar disorder and recommendations for treatment and recovery strategies
- Initial dietitian evaluation and ongoing support from a dietitian during the 16-week trial
- Ongoing support and treatment from our study psychiatrist during the trial
- Home delivered keto-friendly meals (2x/day for 16-weeks)

Danella Hafeman
Danella M. Hafeman, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Hafeman’s research focuses on youth with and at-risk for bipolar disorder. She is interested in understanding clinical and neural mechanisms of risk and resilience, with the goal of eventually preventing mood disorders in these youth. Clinically, she works as a child psychiatrist in the Child and Adolescent Bipolar Services clinic, where she evaluates and treats youth with and at-risk for bipolar disorder.
