SleepLife - Healthy child 10-13
STUDY BASICS
Are you the parent of a child between the ages of 10 and 13? Has your child had a well-child visit at UPMC Primary Care or Family Medicine in the past 12 months? Your child may be eligible for a research study to learn about how childhood sleep impacts future mental health. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
Our goal is to improve screening techniques for mental illnesses in primary care based on sleep patterns, leading to earlier interventions.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?
- Age 10-13
- Has had a well-child visit at UPMC Primary Care or Family Medicine in the past 12 months
- No history of depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, neurodevelopmental disorders, or serious medical conditions
- No issues sleeping
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
After completing an online pre-screening survey, this study begins with a brief eligibility interview (in-person or virtual) that will last less than an hour. If your child is eligible and interested in the full study, participation will involve a sleep monitoring training session followed by two weeks of at-home sleep monitoring with a smartphone and portable devices that track sleep patterns and physiology. Then, online follow-up surveys will be completed every 6 months, and at-home sleep monitoring repeated annually, for up to 3 years. Compensation is provided for participating in the study but not for the initial online pre-screening survey.
