STUDY BASICS
Do you have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes? You may be eligible for a research study to test new mobile phone apps and monitors. Participants will be asked to complete two surveys and have two visits with a diabetes care and education specialist (DCES). Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
This study will compare mobile phone applications (apps) and wearable devices designed to help people with type 2 diabetes better manage their glucose levels. Participants in this study will get to explore what behaviors affect their diabetes management, using different combinations of continuous glucose monitor (CGM), Fitbit activity monitors, and mobile apps. One app being tested is a new researcher-developed app called MPowerHub.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
- Are 25 to 75 years old
- Have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes
- Are currently receiving care at UPMC
- Not currently using insulin
- Currently prescribed at least one diabetes medication
- A1c value obtained in the last 6 months of 7.5% or more
- Have a smartphone with data or Wi-Fi access
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
As part of this study, you would be placed into one of three groups:
- MPowerHub intervention, which involves using the MPowerHub app while wearing both a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and an activity tracker (Fitbit),
- CGM-only group, whcih invloves a brand-name CGM device and its native phone app
- Fitbit-only, which involves a Fitbit activity monitor and its native phone app
If you agree to take part in this study, your involvement will last four to six months
- You’ll be asked to complete two surveys and have two visit with a diabetes care and education specialist (DCES).
- You may be asked to take part in an additional user feedback interview at the end of the study to learn about your experiences.
