STUDY BASICS
Are you 18-79 years old and not diagnosed with any form of liver disease? You may be able to participate in a study to help find out why some people who have fatty liver disease develop more severe liver disease such as cirrhosis or liver cancer while others do not. Participation involves one visit to UPMC Montefiore Hospital in Oakland. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this research study is to understand why some people who have fatty liver disease develop and progress to more severe liver disease such as cirrhosis or liver cancer whereas others with the same condition do not.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
Eligible participants are:
- Between 18-79 years old
- BMI greater than 18.5 and less than 30
- Not diagnosed with any form of liver disease
- Not currently receiving chemotherapy/cancer treatment
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
Participants will undergo an abdominal scan with vibration controlled transient elastography (Fibroscan®), body composition test and a hand grip test, provide blood, saliva and stool samples, and complete surveys regarding your health, lifestyle and diet.
Participants will be compensated $75 for willingness to volunteer in this study after you complete all surveys and tests, and provide the blood, saliva and stool samples according to the specific instructions at the initial entry into the study.
