STUDY BASICS
Are you the parent of an African American child who is currently in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade? If so, you may be able to take part in a research study about parental involvement in education. Compensation provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to help researchers learn more about family involvement in education during early adolescence. Researchers hope to learn more about which kinds of involvement are best for children, and to use this information to train teachers, staff, and school leaders in the future.COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
Parent of a child who is: -African American -Currently in grade 6, 7, or 8WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
Participation involves a survey that takes about 1 hour to complete. You can complete the survey online or over the phone. The survey will include questions about how involved you are in your child’s education, your general parenting style and expectations, your perceptions of your child’s school, your personal characteristics, your racial and ethnic identity, and your experiences of parent-child conflict tactics. Participating parents will be given the option to have their child complete a similar survey.IRB: STUDY19110150A

James Huguley
James P. Huguley is a developmental psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center on Race and Social Problems and in the School of Social Work. His research focuses on racially just ways to support the high achievement of African American students at home and at school. His recent work can be found in the Essence Magazine, Upworthy.com, and WQED, and also in the academic journals Child Development, Sociology of Education, and Teachers College Record.
