STUDY BASICS

If you are at least 18 and smoke cigarettes on some days but not every day and want to try to quit, you may be able to participate in a research study. Researchers want to learn about non-daily smokers’ experiences while quitting smoking. Compensation provided.

STUDY PURPOSE
Researchers want to know how effective nicotine gum is in helping non-daily smokers who want to quit.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Age 18 and up
  • Smoke cigarettes, but not a daily smoker
  • Want to try to quit
  • Not pregnant or planning to be pregnant in the next 6 months

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
You will be assigned by chance (like flipping a coin) to receive either nicotine gum or a placebo gum (plain gum that does not contain nicotine). Participation includes 7 visits over 2 months with 2 follow up visits; one at 3 months and one at 6 months. At 6 of these visits, you will meet with a trained tobacco treatment counselor. You will be asked for breath and urine samples to test for nicotine and to complete an electronic diary on a study-provided smartphone. The phone will be collected at the end of the study.
