STUDY BASICS

Are you the parent of a healthy child 12-17 years old? Your child may be eligible for research study to help researchers understand changes in brain activation during exercise and how it relates to recovery from concussion. Compensation is provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

Our goal is to gather information about the effects of concussion on brain activity and exercise in adolescents aged 12-17. By collecting data before, during, and after exercise, we can see how exercise affects concussion symptoms and brain activity. This knowledge may contribute to better diagnosis and treatment for concussions in adolescents.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?
  • Between 12-17 years of age
  • Physically active
  • No concussions in the past 6 months
  • No more than 2 concussions in their lifetime
  • No history of neurological and mental health disorders (such as epilepsy, seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis or schizophrenia/bi-polar or current suicidal ideation)
  • Not currently pregnant

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Your child would be asked complete a bike exercise test and wear a device that is similar to a shower cap that measures brain waves. In addition, your child will be asked to complete cognitive testing, vestibular and oculomotor screening, and symptom questionnaires that are commonly used following concussion. None of these tests involve needles or radiation. The entire research visit is expected to take approximately 90 minutes, and no follow-up visits are required.
