STUDY BASICS

Struggling with your emotions as a mom? Enroll in a research study evaluating moms’ and their kids’ mental health. Mothers who experience intense mood swings and struggle with anger, and who have a child age 9-11, may be eligible for treatment. Compensation is provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

In this research study, we are trying to understand how mothers' emotions are related to mothers' and children's mental health and suicide outcomes.  We also want to see how these skills affect the quality of relationships between mothers and their children.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?
  • Mother of a child ages 9-11
  • Experiencing intense mood swings or struggling with anger
  • History of suicide behavior
  • Interested in receiving treatment to help with these issues

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
  • Mother and child will participate in a 3-4 hour baseline visit in the office.  Mother and child will be videotaped participating in a series of interactions and tasks together while their physiology is monitored.  They will also complete questionnaires and interviews.
  • Some mothers will be randomly assigned (i.e., selected by chance) to receive treatment on a weekly basis for 6-months following the initial visit. Treatment will take the form of group-based skills therapy.
  • At 6- and 12- months following the baseline visit, mothers and children will return to the office and complete a similar set of tasks as baseline.
  • At 3- and 24- months following the baseline visit, mothers and children will complete interviews and questionnaires remotely.
