Number Knowledge and its Role in the Math Ability of Preschool Children
STUDY BASICS
Are you the parent of a healthy, developing 4- to 5-year-old? You may be able to participate in a research study to help researchers understand how preschoolers learn math. Participation involves one in-person meeting at the Kid’s Thinking Lab. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
Researchers are interested in learning more about how preschool-aged children understand numbers, quantities, and other early math concepts. Findings from this study will help us better understand how children's early number knowledge is related to later math learning and achievement.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?
- Primary caregiver of a 4- to 5-year-old child who is healthy and developing typically
- Primary caregiver of a child who is able to speak, read, and write in English fluently
- Live in Pittsburgh, PA or nearby neighborhoods
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
Participation involves one in-person session with a researcher lasting approximately 1–2 hours, scheduled at a convenient time for your family.

Melissa Libertus
Melissa Libertus, PhD, is a Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Libertus’s research interests include brain development, how children think, and how parents support children’s learning.

Yesenia Arévalo-Jaimes is a Ph.D. student in the Cognitive Psychology program at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research interests involve individual differences in early numeracy and home practices that promote math and socio-emotional skills.
