STUDY BASICS

Are you interested in being an exercise program group leader for older adults? You may be able to take part in a research study to find out if an exercise program can help seniors decrease their risk of fall-related fractures. The role of group leader is to lead the exercise sessions and provide a supportive environment. Training, ongoing support, and compensation provided.

STUDY PURPOSE

Fall-related fractures due to osteoporosis are a leading cause of death and disability in older adults. Exercise can help seniors stay fit and avoid fractures, but fewer than 5% of older adults get the amount of physical activity they need. Previous falls, concerns about falling, and not knowing how to exercise safely are some of the factors that prevent seniors from being active. Seniors who participate in supervised exercise activities with a coach may be able to overcome these barriers to exercise, but more information is needed. The purpose of this study is to find out if a coached exercise program that includes strength training, balance exercises, and aerobic activity can help seniors prevent falls and decrease their risk of fractures. The role of group leader is to lead the exercise sessions and provide a supportive environment.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Age 25 and up
  • Willing and able to lead group exercise sessions 1-3 times a week for most weeks for the next 3 years
  • Must have permission to participate from your primary care physician

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Total study participation lasts 3 years. Participation involves an eight-hour training session where the research staff will train you on each of the exercises in the program and on how to lead the exercise group. You will then be asked to lead 50 minute long group sessions 3 times a week for 3 years. You will also be called by research staff to complete a brief survey about every 4 months, and at the end of the study.
