STUDY BASICS

Are you having difficulty interacting with or controlling your environment, due to either physical, cognitive, and/or sensory impairments? You may be eligible for a research study to evaluate a smart home technology service delivery program for people with disabilities. Compensation is provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of our research study is to evaluate a smart home technology service delivery program for people with disabilities. Specifically, we are looking at the barriers and supports to implementing this program. We are also interested in the perceived value of this service to individuals with disabilities, and the impact that this service has on their participation, independence, and quality of life.


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Interested in the smart home tech service offered by the UPMC CAT
  • Having difficulty interacting with or controlling your environment, due to either physical, cognitive, and/or sensory impairments
  • Living in your own residence with internet services available
  • Using a smartphone, a tablet, or an AAC device
  • Living within an hour's drive (60-70 mile radius) of Pittsburgh, PA
  • Have internet service at your home

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
  • A smart home technology evaluation and training sessions with a clinician
  • A set of baseline questionnaires, a midpoint survey/interview, 3 follow-up sessions, and post service questionnaires/interviews

MEET THE RESEARCHER


Dan Ding

Dan Ding, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Sciences and Technology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Ding received her PhD from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in mechanical and automation engineering. She is an expert in developing and evaluating technology to help people with disabilities maintain or improve their functioning. Dr. Ding is also a research scientist at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL) at the Pittsburgh VA.
