STUDY BASICS

Do you belong to an East Asian racial category? Do you mostly eat home-cooked foods? You may be eligible for a research study at the University of Pittsburgh for adult research participants who belong to East Asian racial category to participate in a two-week study of diet and health. Compensation is provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

In this research project, a self-constructed electronic wearable device called eButton is utilized to record images of food during dietary events. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is applied to the recorded images for identification of food and estimation of its portion size. The objective of this research study is to validate the AI based algorithms for individualized food identification and portion size estimation.


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Belong to East Asian racial category (countries/regions of origin include China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore)
  • Generally healthy without health-related food restrictions                    
  • Live in their own or rented residences
  • Mostly eat home-cooked foods prepared by themselves or family members.
  • Not pregnant
  • Not on a meal plan at a cafeteria
  • Not food-selective (e.g., restricted to a protein focused diet)
  • Have a smartphone, computer, and internet connection

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

The participant will be asked to wear a device during meals and keep a food diary by weighing and taking pictures of the food consumed for two weeks.
