The Rise to Health Study - adolescents 14-17
STUDY BASICS
Are you the parent of an adolescent 14 – 17 years old? Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are looking for teenagers aged 14-17 and a guardian to take part in a research study to understand how social and emotional factors influence teen health. Participation involves surveys, lab visits and at home activities. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
The purpose of the research is to examine how good and bad experiences, events, and activities during adolescence might influence heart health. This study intends to help us better understand how these experiences may affect our day-to-day to contribute to heart health.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?
- Age 14 – 17 at the beginning of the study
- Able to visit the study lab at Carnegie Mellon University
- In good health
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
If you and your adolescent participate in this study, your adolescent will:
- Come to a lab visit at Carnegie Mellon University (3 hours), which includes interviews, questionnaires, heart health measurements (e.g., height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure) and a blood draw (measures inflammation, lipids, and glucose)
- For 15 days: complete brief daily check-ins, take photos of meals, and wear a watch-like device that tracks sleep and physical activity
- One year later: complete a shorter survey and lab visit (30 minutes each)
You, as the caregiver, will:
- Complete an online survey (40 minutes)
- Complete a phone-call interview (20 minutes)
- For 15 days: complete brief daily check-ins each night
