STUDY BASICS
Have you been diagnosed with cancer? If so, you may be eligible for a research study from the University of Pittsburgh looking at how adults with cancer self-advocate or stand up for themselves. As a participant of this study, you will complete a 45-minute one-on-one interview in-person, over the phone, or on Zoom. Compensation is provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
This study is collecting information to understand how individuals with cancer stand up for themselves. A person’s ability to stand up for their own values and beliefs is called “self-advocacy.” As part of this study, you will be asked to complete a one-on-one interview. Your feedback will be used to design programs to help patients with cancer advocate for themselves.

- Are 18 years of age or older
- Identify as male or female
- Are undergoing treatment for cancer
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
The study consists of 1 one-on-one interview. We estimate that the interview will take 45 minutes to complete.

Teresa Thomas
Teresa Hagan Thomas, PhD, BA, RN, is an Assistant Professor of Health Promotion & Development at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Thomas’ research interests include cancer symptom management, instrument development and testing, and financial distress related to chronic health problems.
