STUDY BASICS

Are you currently feeling depressed, down, or blue? Are you 55 years of age or older and willing/able to use a smartphone? You may be eligible for a research study to examine the links between social connections, thinking and memory, depression, and thoughts of suicide, using smartphone technology. Compensation is provided.


STUDY PURPOSE

The purpose of this research study is to examine the links between social connections, thinking and memory, depression, and thoughts of suicide, using smartphone technology. This study wants to use brief twice-daily assessments on a mobile phone to understand how your social connections relate to your thinking and memory, mood, and wellbeing in daily life


COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • age 55 or older
  • are feeling depressed, down, or blue
  • are not diagnosed with dementia
  • are willing/able to use a smartphone

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

Participation includes a 3-week study with one follow-up visit 3 months later. Each session involves completing smartphone-based assessments two times per day for about 3 weeks as well as a weekly phone call with a CONNECT staff member. You will visit the CONNECT office for at least one in-person assessment of mood, health, wellbeing, thinking and memory. If you cannot complete all assessments in this single in-person visit, the remainder of assessments may be completed via video-based teleconference visit.

MEET THE RESEARCHER


Swathi Gujral

Swathi Gujral, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Gujral’s clinical and research work focuses on assessing and treating cognitive dysfunction and depression in older adults. Her long-term research goal is to optimize brain health in older adults with psychiatric and cognitive comorbidities using lifestyle interventions.
