STUDY BASICS

You and your child aged 10-14 may be able to participate in a research study to learn more about teen-parent relationships and how they relate to teen sleep and heart health. Compensation is provided.

STUDY PURPOSE
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and some behaviors that affect heart health begin in the early teens. For example, sleep and family relationships can strongly influence each other, and can also influence heart health. The purpose of this study is to see how parent-child relationships are related to your child’s sleep. Researchers also want to know if sleep and the timing of daily activities are related to risks for heart disease.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?
  • Your child is between the ages of 10-14 and lives with parent at least 60% of the time
  • Does not have a sleep disorder, ADD/ADHD, conduct disorder, bipolar disorder, or pervasive developmental disorder
  • Parent does not work nightshift
  • Parent and child do not have diabetes or heart problems

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
2 study visits and a 10 day at-home study of sleep and daily activities. Study visit one lasts about 1-2 hours, and includes screening and set-up for the 10 day at-home study. The 10 day at-home study involves using a daily diary and wearing a watch-like device on the wrist to assess sleep and activity. Study visit two lasts about 1.5 hours, and involves returning the study devices, two discussion tasks, and other assessments.
