Bone Health in T1D - Parent of child 15-17 with type 1 diabetes
STUDY BASICS
Are you the parent of a child 15-17 years old with type 1 diabetes? If so, your child may be eligible for a research study assessing the effects of diabetes on bone health. Compensation provided.
STUDY PURPOSE
Individuals with type 1 diabetes are at an increased risk of fracture. The purpose of this study is to better understand the effects of type 1 diabetes on bone health in normal weight individuals with no other bone health concerns.
COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
Parent of a child:
- Between the age of 15-17
- Have had type 1 diabetes for at least 5 years
- Have a normal weight based on BMI
- Have an A1C less than 7% or greater than 9%
- For female participants, have normal periods, not on hormonal birth control
WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT
A single, in-person study visit (~2.5-3hrs) that will be conducted at Montefiore hospital and include a brief physical & health history, physical activity questionnaire, fasting blood draw, bone density scan, and an MRI of the lumbar spine and femur. Their Dexcom and pump will need to be off for the MRI (~26 min long), but they can wear a Dexcom for the DXA scan (30 min). Participants will receive the results of the blood work and bone density scan.
