STUDY BASICS

Are you currently going through menopause and experiencing characteristic menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes? You may be eligible for a research study to understand the mechanisms and influence of hot flashes. Participants will complete screening surveys, provide medical history & demographics, and complete sensory testing during noninvasive neuroimaging and wearable sensing.

STUDY PURPOSE

The research aims to investigate the brain and body interaction during hot flashes in perimenopausal and early postmenopausal women by monitoring the central nervous system with Electroencephalography(EEG)/functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy(fNIRS) and the peripheral physiological responses with integrated wearable sensors.  The results from this study will help understand the mechanisms and influence of hot flashes, which will in turn guide future studies for improving women's health during menopause transition.

COULD THIS STUDY BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
  • Are between 40-60 years old
  • Are not pregnant
  • Are not taking tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors, GnRH agonists/antagonists
  • No neurological, heart, hemorrhagic, or muscle disorders
  • Have a minimum of 7 hot flashes per day, or 50 to 60 per week

WHAT PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT

• Receive pre-participation screening
• Receive general information about the procedure
• Attend a study session, up to 4 hours
• Participants may be asked to attend up to 3 sessions over 3 weeks
• Receive compensation for each session
